NSW Electrical Licensing — What It Means for Homeowners

In New South Wales, electrical work is one of the most strictly regulated trades. The NSW Electricity (Consumer Safety) Act 2004 prohibits anyone other than a licensed electrician from performing electrical work — and this applies to every job, no matter how minor. Installing a power point, changing a light fitting, or connecting a hardwired appliance all require a licensed electrician.

There are two tiers of electrical licence in NSW. A Level 1 electrical contractor licence covers all work within the property boundary — switchboards, circuits, outlets, wiring, and appliances. A Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP) licence is additionally required for any work on the network assets between your property and the street: service fuses, overhead and underground service lines, and metering equipment. For most residential jobs, a Level 1 licence is sufficient.

Connect Electric verifies every electrician's licence number against the NSW Fair Trading register before they join our network — and re-verifies regularly to catch any lapsed licences.

How We Vet Every Electrician in Our Network

When you search for a residential electrician in Sydney, you find dozens of operators — but verifying which ones are properly licensed and insured is time consuming. Connect Electric does that work upfront. Before any electrician joins our network, we check their current NSW electrical contractor licence number against the NSW Fair Trading register, confirm their public liability insurance certificate is current and meets our $20M minimum, and review their complaint and disciplinary history.
